Chapter 26

- What Manner of Men -

“I say again!” Wes was awoken to the sound of a man yelling. He opened his eyes to see he was looking down at the ground from the back of a horse. “Give up the slaves or die, simple, really!”

At the mention of slaves, Wes woke up rapidly, sliding forward off the horse. He fell, slamming into the ground with a thud. Hearing laughter, he got to his feet quickly, and saw that it was nearly midday, and there were seven men standing in the road in front of his own group. Looking around at his own group, he saw that the soldiers from Selaffe were there, though they all looked beaten up. Dalia was standing near Iris and Snow, as was Isabella with a bandage over her stomach and chest. Her right arm was also in a sling, but she looked healthy, and alive.

Wes glanced to the seven men, in various forms of leather and plate armor, carrying a wide array of weapons ranging from clubs to crossbows. Looking at the men who were doing their best to be intimidating, Wes felt for his power. It felt odd, like it wasn’t as awake as he was, but it answered when he summoned it.

With his power burning deep inside, Wes turned from the seven men, and walked over to Dalia, Isabella, Iris, and Snow. Stopping just in front of the group, he looked to Isabella.

“How do you feel?” He asked her, looking to the bandages around her. Feeling his own shoulder, it was raw, but no longer hurt. There was already a set of scars from the claws on his skin.

“I am alive.” Isabella smirked at him. “Which is a grand sight better than I should be. Whatever you managed brought me back from the brink, though I am not yet fully healed. Planning on lording that one over me for very long?”

“A small gift for a wonderful teacher and friend.” Wes bowed slightly, ignoring something yelled by one of the seven men. “Nothing is owed.”

“Well.” Isabella looked at Wes for a moment. “Thanks, Shiny.”

“My Lady.” Wes smiled back at her. Looking to Dalia, he nodded. Finally, he turned to Iris, who had Snow protectively behind her. Wes approached and embraced Iris tightly. “It’s all going to be okay.” He whispered to just her, as tears were already falling from his eyes. Whatever she had done to send her emotions into Wes had really done a number on his own emotions.

“Can you really fight all of these men?” She asked in a returned whisper.

“I’m not talking about the slave hunters.” Wes shook his head, still holding Iris tightly. “I’ll deal with them. I’m talking about everything. Do not worry, you have a new life. No one will ever take that from you, I promise. Everything is going to be okay.” With that, he released her, and took a step back. She looked up at him with those imposing silver eyes of hers, and after a moment, she nodded, a small smile forming on her lips.
